Does he even exist? Martin Margiela is the world’s most secretive designer, never allowing himself to be photographed or interviewed directly. But despite the antics, this Belgian has exerted a steady influence on the fashion industry for the past 20 years. Often described as the ‘designer’s designer’, Margiela has an avant garde sensibility – turning everything from old silk scarves to flea market fur coats into couture garments – but is also renown for immaculate tailoring and beautiful dresses.
