It’s not every day that a world-renowned female icon and singing sensation (not to mention one of the most beautiful women we know – Nick Grimshaw referred to her face as looking like ‘a rare painting’) reminisces about the days when she had a $5 fashion budget.

But that’s exactly what Katy Perry did in her ELLE Style Awards acceptance speech, when she won the ELLE Woman Of The Year award on Tuesday evening.

Katy talked of the moment she got a vintage faux-fur coat in her early teens for Christmas. Whilst standing in a gorgeous, floral Vivienne Westwood dress (brownie points for supporting a British designer), Katy recalled how she wore the coat religiously (regardless of extremely toasty weather conditions), but that her school friends had laughed at her coat when she wore it. Her friends’ parents, however, showed interest and asked where it was from. ‘And that was when I discovered I had individual style,' she explained.

She went on to say how she used to go to car-boot sales with her dad on a Saturday, where she'd buy 1940s pencil skirts and polka-dot pieces to complete her look.

We don’t know about you, but it’s this openness and relatable persona that makes us love Katy Perry. She couldn’t have been more deserving of her award.
