Alongside the sweetness, there was also something more dramatic and sinister going on this season. Something futuristic and apocalyptic.
Alexander McQueen summed it up: “We’re in danger of killing the planet through greed. This collection is about me looking at the world and seeing what we’ve done to it.” This meant a show of two parts: beautifully hand-crafted dresses with flower appliques, leading to skeletal-print jumpsuits and heavy black crystal dresses. Christopher Kane showed snarling gorilla prints, while Hussein Chalayan had a finale of dresses printed with images of crushed cars. At Comme des Garcons, Rei Kawakubo opted for black dresses that were hacked to patchwork pieces, while Margiela covered models faces with masks to match their outfits. Don’t try this at home.
