The Man Booker Prize announced its shortlist this morning – taking the contenders for the esteemed book award from 13 down to just 6.

The panel of five judges chaired by Michael Wood, and also comprising Ellah Wakatama Allfrey, John Burnside, Sam Leith and Frances Osborne, considered 156 books for this year’s prize.

A Brief History of Seven Killings by Marlon James (Jamaica) Oneworld

A Spool of Blue Thread by Anne Tyler (US) Chatto & Windus

The Year of the Runaways by Sunjeev Sahota (UK) Picador

A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara (US) Picador
