Annie Lennox has said it is time to ‘be the change’ and empower women in third world countries.

The star, who is an advocate and campaigner for women’s rights around the globe, spoke out after receiving the Outstanding Achievement Award at the ELLE Style Awards 2016.

Lennox, whose charity The Circle aims to support, connect and inspire women to become advocates and agents for change, said she felt the award had given her the opportunity to ‘connect with brands and organisations that have global reach, and kick-start them into addressing the issues of poverty and social responsibility.’

She added: ‘My organisation is about trying to find ways to raise awareness, to raise engagement, to inspire people, because most of us live in a very rarefied bubble. When you go to those countries, you see the lives of these girls who can't get access to education or sexual and reproductive healthcare, things we take for granted; all the instances of abuse, abuse towards our gender, which are rampant across the world. The Circle is about trying to raise the platform. We are the catalysts for raising awareness and being the change.'

The singer, who also made an appearance at last weekend's Women of the World Festival, was joined by her daughter Tali, who said she was 'incredibly proud' of her mother.
