You can't go wrong with a good leather jacket. They're effortlessly cool, and with the right attitude, completely badass.

But we're always looking of new ways of adding a killer twist, or elevating the hyde to superstar status. Far from slashing and cropping, we're adding on now, not taking away. The latest in leather DIY involves a great palette and a dash of Picasso-esque mastery.

This isn't entirely a new thing, as painted and appliquéd leather jackets have become the hero staples on the catwalks from Alexander McQueen through to Gucci.

So if you simply like the finer things in life (and a touch of subtlety) then you should keep an eye on Elie Saab, Gucci and McQueen, because the jackets may cost you a small mortgage, but a leather jacket is for life, and these are some of the most beautiful ones we've ever seen.

Naturally, though, if a trend's taken off, the celebs are hopping on the bandwagon. So Rita Ora, Rihanna and Zayn Malik are all repping the paintbrush-reworked style.

However, the Kardashians have turned the trend from delicate gypsy florals, to a bolder, more in your face statement.

Remember that time Kim Kardashian wore her own face on her jacket (repeatedly)?

The 'look' even got Kanye's much-needed seal of approval. He has recently had hand-painted leather jackets made for his kids, with Nori seen strutting around in one with Kanye's lyrics on.

So, here's how to quickly get in on the action. High-street brands including Nasty Gal, Zara and ASOS have slogan biker jackets for as low as £40 - erm, bargain.

You could, of course, DIY your own...

But if you want to really get people's attention, you need to invest in a bespoke design by a few creative British artists.

Independent girl bosses Laurie Lee and Elizabeth Illsley have put their own spin on the trend, creating jackets with empowering feminist quotes and our favourite first world problems, such as "I shave my legs for you", "a girl is a gun" and "make me a mixtape". Super sassy at the £500 mark.
