If you needed any more proof that the '80s and '90s were back, Balenciaga is now making hair scrunchies. The trend-setting label used the retro chunky hair ties in its resort 2018 campaign and is now selling them online. However, tapping into the trend will set you back a little more than you might expect – the scrunchies are currently retailing for £145.

While spending that much money on a hair tie might seem a little extravagant, this is not the most outrageous designer offering we've seen recently. Last summer, Prada was selling a paper clip for £140, while in November Moschino sold a dry cleaning bag for £560. And this is of course not the first time that Balenciaga has made headlines with its collections. From the £1,125 Ikea-inspired tote to the £1,405 'paper bag' and the £1,795 'car mat' skirt, the brand's tongue-in-cheek designs always go down a storm – and almost always sell out.

And besides, the scrunchies are of course far more luxurious than ones you might find in your local pharmacy. Balenciaga's hair ties are crafted from grained leather in Italy and stamped with the house's trademark silver logo.

They come in plenty of colourful hues, including baby blue and forest green, black, yellow and the colour of the season, ultra violet.

Whatever you think of their hefty price tag, there's little doubt that we'll be seeing these all over the front rows at fashion month.
