In a new interview with 1843, Donatella Versace says the brand will no longer carry fur. "Fur? I am out of that. I don't want to kill animals to make fashion. It doesn't feel right," she said. Donatella is the creative director of the brand.
Today, you can buy a rabbit pillow and a camel coat with mink lapels on versace.com. Fur has been seen on the runway as recently as the fall 2018 collection in Milan this February. We're guessing Donatella isn't too concerned over this discrepancy: "Versace needs to mean change," she said later in the interview.
Fur and Versace have been virtually synonymous in fashion since the brand was founded by Donatella's late brother, Gianni Versace in 1978. That being said, fur remains as polarized as ever in the fashion community. Designers like Michael Kors have pledged never to use it again, Christopher Kane almost broke the internet with his fur-lined Crocs, and last fall at London Fashion Week, the threat of animal rights protestors discouraged street style wearers from peacocking their furry wares.
