The competition to be one of the 10 interns to help edit ELLEs October issue was one of the most popular stories weve ever run on ELLEuk.com. And hundreds of you entered. Now we have finally decided on a shortlist of winners that were going to welcome into the offices of ELLE for this unique initiative, I thought Id let you know how we chose.
Each of my departments at the magazine had a grandly named ILO intern liaison officer. This person managed the entries. I would say to all of you who were unsuccessful that many factors were in play. We did remind everyone several times you have to be an intern to apply, so we had to immediately reject all those who were not interning.
And, for future reference, when entering a talent contest, thoroughly read the entry criteria. You would be surprised how many people went off on a tangent and failed to complete the information required. If you cant do that then you cant work on a successful business like ELLE, can you?
After wed come up with a shortlist for each department, we talked through the entries in detail. I was looking for new ideas, people with their own voice and those who had done their homework and offered us elements of their entry that were suitable for ELLE and only ELLE. Its not enough to say Im really great, have me which I often encounter with those asking to intern at ELLE.
I picked the people who thoroughly understood the brand and this brief and those who had a unique idea to bring to us. Experience wasnt the issue enthusiasm, passion and clever but original thinking were what I was looking for. I also like spirit and in my career have always opted to employ those with less experience or qualifications but more spirit, these kind of people are game changers, they think laterally rather than ticking off to-do lists.
At ELLE, all our interns are paid and have employee rights, we mentor them and follow their careers with interest and support after all, interns are the stars of the future and I would say 80 per cent of my team started out as interns.
If you didnt make it this time dont despair (this is an annual event), just keep improving at what you do and make sure you leave a lasting and professional impression with whoever you are interning with now. And the main tip: be as positive and enthusiastic as possible at all times. Remember those interning with you are as likely to be successful as those you are interning for, so make sure you support other interns as you go through your career.
