And who am I not to bow down to candy colours? So I picked mint-green as the shade to test for my coloured denim challenge. Jeans are great for the weekend (with a Breton top), but will they work in the office? Turns out, the answer is yes. Add a structured jacket (in navy) and a crisp white shirt and you can look professional in coloured jeans. This look works for my less formal days and is easy to zip around town in, too. The jeans have to be made of thick denim to maintain a professional feel, and you can add snake-print shoes if you’re feeling braver than me. ’s grey kitten-heeled slingbacks were more my comfort zone with this mint.

This navy jacket by Theory is less structured than the one I wore, but just as useful.

But how do you shop for jeans? Throughout our lives, our bodies change (I have had four children, so my style is reflected in my ever-changing silhouette) and styles evolve, so shopping for this wardrobe staple becomes a regular task. I asked my friend and denim guru Donna Ida, because she knows everything there is to know about jeans. Fact. She told me the following:

  • Allow at least half an hour to find the right shape and cut for you.

  • If they fit easily, drop a size – premium denim has a two per cent stretch built in. You should jump around when trying jeans on, too.

  • If you have ‘grab’ room around the crotch, drop a size.

  • Take the shoes you plan to wear with jeans along with you – particularly for flares or bootleg.

  • Get visible pocket linings removed – especially for white jeans (at the front).

  • Remember, white is more flattering than a very faded blue – unless you are very young.

  • If you are curvy and want to go for a skinny style, go for a high-waisted pair.

  • Three inches above the ankle is about right for a cropped jean.

  • Dress down neon jeans with a grey T-shirt, or choose fluoro denim shorts instead.

  • If you can fit two fingers down the back of a waistband that is good, a whole hand is bad.

So now you know. These are the denim commandments. Shop by them.

These are perfect to wear with a pair of bootleg or flared jeans.

Any floral heels this height will work with coloured denim. New Look, Preen for Aldo Rise, Dune and Karen Millen all have good options on the high street.

A biscuit shaped like a Corgi or a Royal Guard you say? Don’t mind if I do! Clarins sent these to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and its new hand and nail treatment cream (which is now in my drawer).

It’s only day seven of being back at work and away from my 10-month-old daughter Mabel. My PA and editorial assistant Natalie (without whom my life doesn’t run so smoothly) got this for Mabel – who coincidentally has a strawberry-themed wardrobe.

and Stephanie Churchill PR sent me some flowers, so the office is very spring-like today.
