Collars are still riding high on the fashion radar, and the trend is set to continue well into AW12 and beyond. Invest in one and you’ll have a transformative piece that will do wonders for all the sweaters and dresses you already have in your wardrobe.
But how to wear it? This season’s catwalks showed a host of new ideas for what types and how-to: the Peter Pan collar is an easy style to wear, adding a little good-girl wink to outfits (think Louis Vuitton’s prim and purse-lipped girls). This one from Little Fille is the perfect example. Tied at the neck with a velvet ribbon, it’s the perfect piece to layer over round neck sweaters or high neck silk blouses. Make sure your neckline is high as the Peter Pan looks best worn atop clothing.
For night, the jewelled collar is a brilliant piece to have fun with, and the ones by Joanne Hynes ones are fantasies of sequins and jewels which will add sparkle to knitted jumpers and evening wear.
If you are wearing a boat neckline or a shallow V, try a bib style collar like the ones from new Italian brand Co|te. This clever brand sells dresses and tops with detachable collars that can be bought separately, and they are incredibly versatile. Whether splashed with feathers or made of minimalist leather, these can be layered under anything from leather T-shirts to tailored shift dresses for work.
And then there’s the double collar look, seen on the catwalks at Giles and a prominent feature of the new K by Karl Lagerfeld collection. This is a fun look for night time, and looks best with an austere, high collar such as the Lagerfeld one or the sequin-spattered Topshop one. Wear over an existing collar or as a choker with a lower cut shirt for a bold look. A white collar is an interesting twist on an evening gown – just wear hair up for the fullest effect.
