Heiress, model and band member of Thrush Metal Alice Dellal is the star of Dr. Martens autumn/winter 2012 campaign and appears in a film – directed by Fred & Nick – which you can watch exclusively here on ElleUK.com.
Set against an urban London background (it was shot in Hackney Wick, home to all of London’s cool young things), the film follows a group of friends during a night out in London. Beginning at a birthday party, the gang winds up in a bathtub, dancing on a rooftop, and in a pool hall the morning after the night before.
The melodic voice of Tom Hickox singing 'The Pretty Pride of Russia' provides the stirring soundtrack to the film, which also features models Billie Turnbull and Henry Pedro-Wright, alongside British musician Gwilym Gold – who will all star in their own films for the brand to be released shortly.
Alice, with her trademark partially shaved head, is often seen wearing Dr. Martens, both on and off the red carpet. ‘[I’m] not sure which were my first ever pair,’ she told us. ‘I've worn them since I was a child, I even had a pair for school at one point. When I was little I remember having a yellow pair of 8-hole boots and black ones with flowers all over.’
‘Many more came after but the first pair I ever bought myself, brand new from the shop was when I was 16, were white leather 8-holes! Usually I'd go for black or another classic colour but I'd never seen anyone wearing white ones and they just caught my eye. I wore them every day for about two years. They are no longer white and have massive metal studs I put around the ankles on them.’
So loyal to the brand is she that if she had to choose between wearing either heels or Dr. Martens for the rest of her life, she’d choose the boots: ‘I wear boots everyday anyway and DMs nowadays have such a huge variety to choose from, including ones with heels!’
Yes, that’s true. This collection does feature a studded pair of Docs with a stiletto, which Dellal says are ‘perfect for someone who wants to add a couple inches to their height!’
And, while Alice's look leans towards the punkier realms of style, and the brand is known for being popular with edgy subcultures, she insists that you don’t have to be on the fringe of fashion to wear them: ‘People have been wearing DMs since the 1960s, from policemen to punks! They’re just good leather boots! Everyone should have a pair! Personally, I prefer classic but there are so many different styles, colours and prints these days that literally anyone can wear them.’
