Falling between the Globes and the Oscars, the Screen Actors Guild Awards are historically one of the lesser anticipated awards events on the red carpet calendar. However due to the writers strike in the U.S, there has been a major glamour gap and last night’s awards ceremony (which is sponsored by the striking writers union and therefore allowed to go ahead as normal) was the first, and possibly the last opportunity in 2008, for many stars to step out in their red carpet best and shine.

Elle’s favourites included Marion Cotillard , who was nominated for best leading actress in La Vie en Rose and looked incredible in Nina Ricci (she lost out to Julie Christie for her performance in ‘Away from Her’) and both Cate Blanchett - who wore Balenciaga, and Kate Hudson in a strapless, romantic, floor-sweeping gown.
