Olivia Wilde and Anna Kendrick knock back the beers in largely improvised US indie comedy, Drinking Buddies.

Sharp, observant and funny, it subtly explores how booze can both fuel and complicate relationships.

Wilde has never been better as Kate, a laid-back brewery employee who's so chummy with her jokey co-worker and drinking buddy Luke (New Girl's Jake Johnson), you'd think they were a couple.

Except that she's dating the relatively sensible Chris (Ron Livingston) and Luke's in a serious relationship with younger Jill (Kendrick).

When the four go on a weekend away in the country, Kate and Luke's bond deepens; while Chris and Jill discover a few things in common, too.

Yet you're never quite sure who's meant to be with who in this film, which feels more real and relatable than your average rom com.

It also proves that Tron star Wilde is no ice queen: just watch her let her hair down.

Drinking Buddies is in cinemas on Friday 1 November
