HRH Prince George Alexander Louis will have seven godparents, it has just been announced.

In a break with royal tradition, they are drawn from among William and Kate’s close circle of friends – Oliver Baker, Emilia Jardine-Paterson, Earl Grosvenor, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, Julia Samuel, William van Cutsem and Prince William’s cousin Zara Phillips – rather than being a more political appointment of foreign dignitaries an other royals.

Kate’s sister Pippa and William’s brother Prince Harry are unexpectedly absent from the more informal list, but both are expected to attend the Christening ceremony at St James’ Palace at 3pm today.

The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, and William’s father and step-mother Charles and Camilla will also attend, along with Kate’s parents and brother James.

Three-month-old George will wear a replica of the famous royal Christening gown, which has been worn by 60 royal babies previously, while Hollywood photographer Jason Bell will be on hand to take the pictures – one of which will be released to press after the ‘intimate’ event.
