The BFI London Film Festival kicked off last night with the European premiere of Tom Hanks’ latest film Captain Phillips.

The Hollywood power-player arrived on the red carpet with his wife of 25 years, Rita Wilson who looked sleek in a black dress with golden sequin star-burst on one hip.

While we’ll always love the man who brought us Forrest Gump, there was another Tom who easily beat him in the style stakes. Mr Tom Ford also made an appearance at the opening night gala dressed in a black velvet blazer and bow-tie.

Captain Phillips, a thriller based on real events starring Hanks as a cargo ship captain held captive by Somali pirates, is already generating Oscars buzz.

At the press conference for the film Hanks, who recently revealed he has been living with Type 2 diabetes, said he doesn’t want to play any more roles that require extreme fluctuations in weight.

‘I've talked to a number of actors who have gained weight for roles and just out of the sheer physical toll... no one wants to do it again.’

Expect more star-spotting over the next twelve days as the BFI London Film Festival continues and Carey Mulligan, Joseph Gordon Levitt and Kate Winslet all hit the capital.
