ELLE reviews White House Down

Channing Tatum stars

The White House is under attack and Channing Tatum is the only man who can save it!

It's a fun premise and in the hands of Independence Day director Roland Emmerich, White House Down is a thoroughly enjoyable ride.

Tatum is great as John Cale, a cop and would-be Secret Service agent on a tour of the president's pad with his daughter.

When terrorists sneak in and hold everyone hostage, John must spring into action to save the President (Jamie Foxx) and his daughter.

Emmerich throws every have-a-go-hero cliche at the screen but it's done with a deft touch: suspenseful scenarios come thick and fast and Maggie Gyllenhaal lends gravitas as the agent communicating with John from the command centre.

As soon as it's all over, you'll be picking holes in the plot - but you'll still have a smile on your face.
