Julianne Moore trades Steve Coogan in for True Blood star Alexander Skarsgard in intelligent new drama, What Maisie Knew.

Moore is Susanna, a loving but irresponsible mother who’s more interested in partying and singing in her rock band after a split with Beale (Coogan), the womanising father of young Maisie (Onata Aprile).

Enter Alexander Skarsgard as Lincoln, a seemingly carefree bartender who may just be Maisie’s only hope at a decent parent figure.

It’s a clever, moving portrait of a dysfunctional family that brings its source novel by Henry James bang up to date.

Skarsgard plays against type as the slouchy, laid-back but sensitive Lincoln while newcomer Joanna Vanderham is one to watch as Maisie’s pretty young nanny.

A poignant and thought-provoking drama that’s also entertaining thanks to its lively characters and top-drawer cast.

The European Premiere of What Maisie Knew is on 20 June at the EIFF (also screening 22 June) and the film is in cinemas 23 August
