Oversize your sleeves, wear your button-down backwards, attach faux fur bag-buddies with googly eyes to all your favourite totes.

Keeping up with the trends is a brilliant way to engage with the ever fluid, largely innovative fashion landscape, of course, but sometimes, you can't beat a bit of retrospection for style inspiration.

From the 20s flapper through to 90s grunge, there have been so many eras of style excellence to draw from and each of these eras has had great eyewear to boot.

There's nothing like donning an up-do, sweetheart neckline and a pair of 50s cat-eye specs to make you feel like the star in a film of your own life.

Here are four retro styles that we'll be revisiting over and over again and some specs to help you recreate the vibe:

Channelling Elizabeth Taylor circa 1959, or Caroll Baker a little after that, this is a girl whose hair always has volume despite the sea breeze and who wouldn't dream of letting the elements disturb her perfectly flicked eyeliner.

Whether at the beach or in the city, this girl's not beyond showing a bit of joie de vivre, but only when there's a photographer around. She knows her angles the two-piece comes first.

Think Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast At Tiffany's or Rita Hayworth in pretty much anything she's ever done. These women were flawlessly glamorous, in form-fitting silks and velvets, with cinched in waists and fur stoles. Hemlines might be shorter now, but the hourglass silhouette is a timeless winner.

Too cool for school, this girl spent most of her formative years on the back of a Vespa, toting a box bag, beret and some heavy mascara.

Little shift dresses and knee-high pop socks are order of the day, as are geometric prints, bolder shades of eyeshadow and some oval specs to emphasise the doe-eyes.

The Grunge Girl

The 90s was an incredible decade for a variety of reasons. Fashion got tougher and dirtier, music packed a punch and the 'cool girl' was anywhere and everywhere.

Our grunge icons were having a great time all the time, but with a deliberate air of melancholy about them, to give the impression that theirs was a vibe you could never understand.

Delightfully the grunge generation did something for geek chic, with the Cobains and the Loves of the world making awkwardness and pensiveness de rigueuer.

To channel the look, pair a slip dress with a sweat shirt and go heavy on the eyeliner.
