Ryder began her affair with period pictures in the early nineties as May Welland in Martin Scorsese's The Age of Innocence, starring alongside Michelle Pfeiffer. Adapted from Edith Wharton's 1920 novel, the tightly corseted love story earned Ryder an Academy Award nomination.
