A Coen brothers' movie is always greeted with excitement at Cannes and they've scored another winner with hip folk music flick, Inside Llewyn Davis.

Set in early 60s New York and Chicago, it stars Oscar Isaac (W.E.) as the titular folk singer and Carey Mulligan and Justin Timberlake as his folk-singing friends.

Carey's character Jean is a far cry from her glamorous turn - all heavy knits and furrowed brow.

It's a quirky, appealing quasi-road trip movie with amusing moments and a story that's more thoughtful than dramatic.

All the actors perform entire musical numbers live, and well. Les Mis eat your heart out.

It also has a central character who's both hard to like and easy to care about.

No mean feat, but this is the Coen brothers, and Oscar's a talented man - during Cannes 2013, he's become a bona fide star.

Inside Llewyn Davis premiered in Cannes and comes out in the UK January 24 2014
