Video of the day: Space Oddity

Astronaut records Bowie classic – in space

Just when we thought our Bowie obsession had reached its zenith, along comes another viral video to prove us wrong.

This time though, it’s not another Bowie-as-Christ new-album game-changer but rather Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield’s take on the classic Bowie hit Space Oddity. Which was recorded on the International Space Station.

That’s in actual space.

And apparently, it has the approval of Bowie himself, who retweeted the link to the video with the caption, 'hallo Spaceboy'.

In his five month stint on the ISS, Hadfield has quietly been garnering himself a cult following over social media thanks to his videos documenting life at zero gravity, including what it’s like to eat mixed nuts and what happens when astronauts cry. But could this be the one to – ahem – send his fame stratospheric?

It’s been less than 48 hours since the video was uploaded to YouTube but it’s already had an impressive five and half million views (and we at ELLE Towers account for only about half a million of those). In that time Hadfield has also successfully returned to earth. What a legend.
