Monica Rose is known for styling Kendall Jenner, Chrissy Teigen, Gigi Hadid, Khloe Kardashian, and tons of other high-profile celeb clients in sexy, body-hugging ensembles. She helped popularise the look that now dominates street style: duster coats layered over tight dresses, a pair of jeans, or shorts. She's also a master of putting together ~fierce~ monochromatic outfits and mixing high-end pieces with items from upcoming designers and fast-fashion labels.

Now, her aesthetic is universally accepted, but it wasn't always so easy. When she moved to L.A. back in 2001, she didn't even realise you could make a career out of being a stylist. With no connections and no experience, she started from scratch, eventually landing editorial work.

She met Kim Kardashian in 2007 on one such job and has worked with the family ever since, styling each of the sisters while steadily growing her client base. At Coachella's Reebok Classic Leather Crib, Rose, 38, spoke about how she got where she is today, what it's like working with her celeb clients, and why everyone should ~chill out~ about festival fashion.

You dress some of the most influential celebrities out there — how did you get to where you are now?

I grew up in a small town [in Watsonville, California] — I didn't really even know what a stylist was when I moved to Los Angeles. But while working in [a boutique downtown] stylists would come in and out, and I was like, Wow, you can really make a profession doing this.Of course, I had no idea how to do it. I had to learn everything on my own, so I networked, I met photographers, and I did a lot of jobs for free at the beginning of my career.

Was it hard to start cold like that?

I had a lot of doors closed in my face. People turned me down, [designers] would say, "We can't loan, sorry." It sparked a lot of fire in me ... I remember saying, "One day you're going to open those doors for me."

Do you ever think about those people who turned you down and say, 'I told you so!'?

You know, you always forgive, but you never forget.

Some of the street-style looks you create are only worn for a few hours, but they're seen everywhere. Do you think street style is more influential than red-carpet fashion now?

What people love so much about the everyday looks is that they're so relatable. People want to get ideas about what to wear in their own lives, and the red carpet is a bit more predictable.

How did you come up with your signature duster-coat style?

I don't feel ownership of that — I don't feel ownership of anything, really. But I just loved how it looked. Sometimes I have to steer away from it to switch it up a bit, but we've even used silk robes. I love finding cool dusters with different fabrics.

Do Chrissy, Khloe, Kendall, or Gigi have any quirks about them that only you'd know as their stylist?

Sometimes they all get weird with me putting earrings on them. They're like, "No, I'll do it. That's so weird that you put earrings on." It's not one of them — it's all of them. I just think of it
