2018's Golden Globes Award will surely go down in history as the most political yet. From Oprah's iconic speech and the suggested all-black dress code to Sterling K. Brown's historical win and actresses showing up with activists as dates, the Golden Globes was indeed a political battle ground.

One brand on the front line? Shiffon, a fine jewellery company founded by Shilpa Yarlagadda. With the motto 'wear the change you want to see,' the company donates 50% of the sales of their Duet pinky ring to seed grants for start-ups around the world. The design serves as a daily reminder of the pinky pledge taken to support women.

We caught up with founder Yarlagadda to learn more about the brand.

Tell us a little bit about this particular pinky ring collection. How did it come to be?

Supporting women is so important to us because it's the women who supported us who helped Jenny [Wang] and I get to where we are right now in Shiffon. They gave us the confidence to pursue this and because of their support we wanted to do something to help more women. We hope to build one of the powerful communities of strong women who support each other and that's why we created the Duet Pinky Ring as an adjustable pinky ring that represents a pinky promise to pay it forward to support women.

Half the profits from the piece fund seed grants for young female entrepreneurs and companies that empower women because we want to see their startups succeed and to give young entrepreneurs an opportunity to pursue their dreams.

Why was it important for you to be a part of the Golden Globes this season in particular?

The conversation that is going on right now about how men have treated women in the workplace and how women's roles are changing is so important. It's the ethos behind why Shiffon exists and why the Startup Girl foundation is so core to who we are.

What role do you think accessories brands like yours can play in the current political climate?

We want to create a world in which young girls grow up knowing they can follow their passions with the support of a worldwide network of strong women. That's why we created this ring and this pinky promise to support women. This ring has a global message, and we hope that when women around the world see it on someone else, they know they feel the same way about women's rights and know that they are supporting a women's business that will inevitably support other women-led businesses.

It's amazing to see women buy our fine jewellery for themselves and for the women they care about. Not only is it supporting women led-and-focused business but it also makes the jewelry very personal and meaningful to people and a symbol for very important moments and relationships.

How does your brand navigate the red carpet when it's poised to also serve as political stage?

We are a social enterprise that supports women's choices and young female entrepreneurs. We want to make the world more fair for women. I think we should all want that—and if people want to make it into a political issue, well, we will always stand up for women. All of our Duet Pinky Rings fund seed grants for female entrepreneurs or companies that empower women, but for Golden Globes weekend and the week afterwards, we wanted to show our support for how women are coming together to support other women through Time's Up.

Thus, we are donating 50% of the profits to Time's Up for the next week from this ring before we return to allocating those profits to fund seed grants for women led businesses.
