As usual the Golden Globes was a night of style, beauty and mega-watt glamour and as the first of this year’s major awards ceremonies we were on the lookout for this season’s emerging red carpet trends.

Without further ado, here’s what we found...

RED ON RED

Gone are the days when actresses avoided red carpet clashes by steering clear of the bright shade. Scarlet gowns are back on the menu, and the bigger the silhouette, the better. Best Actress winner Jennifer Lawrence led the charge in her full-skirted gown, but Zooey Deschanel wasn’t far behind, teaming her (very similar) strapless Oscar de la Renta gown with a set of classic pearls. In terms of awards, it was the most successful shade of the night– Best Actress in a TV Drama Claire Danes wore a red gown – so nominees of future awards take note.

WHITE OUT

Winter whites are not only a huge trend on the catwalk but the red carpet as well, with Amanda Seyfried (in ), Anne Hathaway ( couture), Glee’s Lea Michelle (in ) and Heidi Klum all reaching for the often unforgiving shade. Top of the pile, though, had to be Downton Abbey’s Michelle Dockery, who’s white dress overlayed with a structured gold lace yoke by Alexandre Vauthier has to be a contender for best dress of the night.

SHEER GLAMOUR

For those who weren’t brave enough to tackle the red carpet minidress – the ever-stylish Thandie Newton was alone with hers – but wanted to flash a little leg the sheer skirt came into play. Showing fortune favours the brave, both Rachel Weisz in black spotty and Kerry Washington in nude bejewelled were two of the biggest style hits of the evening.

CLASSIC BLACK

Testament to the fact that the old favourite LBD packs a punch whatever your age were an array of stars, right from Helen Mirren (in B) to Rosie Hungtington-Whiteley (wearing ) in a slew of jet black gowns. Also on board with the black gown trend were Kate Hudson and Nicole Kidman (both in ), Kristen Wiig and Julianne Moore (in custom-made Tom Ford).
