For a fourth consecutive year, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been named the most powerful woman in the world on Forbes' annual female power list.

This year's list features nine heads of state, 28 CEOs, 18 entrepreneurs, 13 billionaires and 9 celebrities… Now that’s a cover by numbers.

A handful of leading ladies include former US secretary of state and first lady Hilary Clinton, Michelle Obama, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg and Beyoncé. Plus, we shouldn't forget to mention that two Brits made the list: Queen Elizabeth II is ranked at no. 35, with Anna Wintour not far behind at no. 39.

The women are chosen from eight categories or 'power bases', with money, media presence, spheres of influence and impact all factors in the rankings.
