For the beautiful people of New York City there was only one place to be last night: the Chanel party to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Bijoux de Diamants jewellery collection.

In attendance were Blake Lively, Alexa Chung, January Jones, Elle Fanning, Diane Kruger, Leigh Lezark, Mad Men actress Jessica Pare and Australian Rose Byrne, all wearing Chanel, of course, for example Miss Chung, who accessorised her frock with silver glitter Tabitha Simmons shoes.

In 1932, when Coco Chanel designed her first fine jewellery collection, it caused a huge stir: with the world sunk in economic depression following the Wall Street Crash its lavish use of diamonds was extraordinary, as were the designs. The styles were innovative and modern; the likes of the huge diamond-encrusted stars and ribbon-like bows had never been seen before.

The collection has since become part of fashion history, and remains a key reference in Chanel collections to this day. Chanel explained her inspiration at the time by saying, ‘I want the jewellery to be like a ribbon on a woman’s fingers. I wanted to cover women with constellations.’
