Converse Represent: Speech Debelle

After 9 nights of Live music, the final performers include Speech Debelle who shares the stage with her idol, Nas.

After nine nights of live music at the 100 Club in London, present their final night of live music tonight (10 August) with headliner Nas being supported by Kano and award-winning musician, Speech Debelle. ELLE speak to the critics favourite about her involvement in the music series.

Your second album (Freedom Of Speech) was out earlier this year – how was that to create?

It was a great experience. I got to work with an amazing producer called Kwes and I wanted to kind of mix the live instrumentation of the first album and make it a little more beat driven and give it a groove.

Your debut album (Speech Therapy) was critically praised and won the Mercury music prize – was there a lot of pressure when creating your second album?

There wasn’t really pressure. I’ve been doing this a long time and I don’t think an artist goes into a studio and worries about what’s going to happen otherwise you wouldn’t ever be able to make anything. You just go in and do what you love doing.

How did you get involved with the Converse Represents project?

They just asked if I wanted to be a part of it and I said “absolutely!” To be on the same stage as Nas is probably one of the greatest things that can happen for a rapper. He is probably the greatest of all time. I’m looking forward to it, but I’m nervous. I’m nervous he might just end up being a human being.

What is the best thing about performing live?

You get to live your dream! When you are young you pretend you’re on stage, in your bedroom, singing into a deodorant bottle or whatever, and it’s like the chance you actually get to live the dream. It’s amazing.
