We’ve had some weird boyfriends in our time but one whose best friend is a bong-smoking, prostitute-using, walking and talking teddy bear? That’s new.

It’s what ELLE cover star Mila Kunis’ character Lori has to contend with in Ted, a comedy from Family Guy writer, Seth MacFarlane.

MacFarlane voices the animated bear, a toy who magically comes to life and comforts his owner, a loner kid called John.

They’ll be best friends forever - but when John grows up, turns into Mark Wahlberg and gets a hot girlfriend with marriage on the mind, forever starts to seem like a very long time.

It’s a fun set-up for a film with just the kind of wickedly dark comedy you’d expect from MacFarlane, who dishes the kind of wildly inappropriate sexual humour often applied to Family Guy’s Stewie the grown-up baby and Brian the talking dog.

But Ted’s no one-track gross-fest: Wahlberg manages to create a genuine bond with his furry friend, not to mention his patient girlfriend, Lori. And the idea of men struggling to leave childhood behind is pretty universal.

The plot does drag at times: a thriller element is thrown in too late, suggesting that writer-director MacFarlane still has something to learn about feature length films.

But that’s splitting hairs - Ted is still an enjoyable, nostalgia-driven blast that you can take your boyfriend to with confidence. Just make sure he leaves his teddy bear at home.

Ted is in cinemas on Wednesday
