The actress became the first person to wear a dress by new Dior designer Raf Simons at last night’s London premiere of , less than two weeks after Simons wowed the fashion world with his couture debut.

Cotillard chose a fitted strapless dress marrying an intricately embroidered, straw-toned basket-weave bodice with a black-and-white skirt in the same weave. The actress, who plays Miranda Tate in the final film in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, finished her polished look with a gold belt and red clutch and heels.

Meanwhile, the dress’s designer sat down to discuss hisin a Dior-produced video.

‘We all know and we all perceive Christian Dior in a very specific way,’ he says. ‘Finding myself in the house now, I have to say that I discovered even much more things that I didn't really see before, like specific codes that he uses, and specific gestures and specific attitudes. Because he was an extreme architectural designer.’

As for his ambitions for couture, Simons says, ‘it’s all about re-adapting the attitude and reshaping the psychology, more linked to our world right now and how women live their lives these days.’

‘My desire is to have the history and the future together by making a more modern dress and a more, let's say, historical dress, and kind of fusing them together,’ he adds.

Simons called his decision to abbreviate some of the full couture shapes into shirts and jackets ‘an attitude gesture’. Whatever it is, it’s a new era of couture sure to fuel the world’s dreams.
