Rihanna to produce UK fashion competition

Watch out, Alexa Chung. Rihanna plans to co-produce and appear in a new TV series seeking the best and brightest of British design talent—and she wants you.

The singer is recruiting designers to compete for the chance to create an outfit for her Wireless Festival performance this summer.

‘I've always had a great love of fashion,’ Rihanna said in a release from Sky Living. ‘It's a constant source of inspiration in my life, and is a big reason why I've grown into the person and artist I am today.’

The series will progress along familiar challenge-elimination lines for 10 weeks, with competitors creating outfits for different performers in every episode. There’s no word on who will play “client” during the as-yet-unnamed series, but we have a feeling that Ri-Ri will tap into her vast entertainment-world network to call in favours from people worth watching (Katy Perry? Kelly Rowland? Florence Welch?).

Rihanna, who has looked to Jeremy Scott, Tom Binns and Oscar de la Renta for past show designs, said she had been ‘very fortunate’ to work with ‘truly amazing’ fashion talent during her career.

‘[T]hey have been instrumental in making sure my creative vision reaches the stage. I am excited to follow the journey of our aspiring contestants and see how their individuality influences their efforts during the course of the show.’

Although Sky Living promises that Rihanna will take an active role in casting, she’s looking to another entertainment-world friend to assume day-to-day hosting duties—Girls Aloud singer Nicola Roberts.

‘I was so flattered when Rihanna asked me to work with her on this show,’ Roberts said in a statement. ‘I'm so excited for us to get started on finding a new up-and-coming British designer who just needs a chance—a little bit of help in getting their skills noticed.’

Think you’ve got what it takes to up the ante on Rihanna’s infamous rhinestone bikini? A typo-ridden application form (proofread, people!) asks applicants to describe their style, inspirations, training and any criminal convictions—not that that should be a deterrent. After all, the woman in charge periodically draws fire for going topless in fields, smoking suspicious-looking cigarettes, gyrating provocatively on the X Factor stage... you get the idea.

We’re betting on watershed-busting stage bikinis, derivative “Single Ladies”-style leotards and diamante embellishment everywhere. So, who would you like to see in the client seat? And have you got what it takes to dress a stage queen?
