Just what do you wear to an event with millions of viewers around the world, and you, the main meal on the fashion menu?
In what was one of the most anticipated fashion moments of 2009, and almost certainly the most nerve-wracking of Michelle Obama's lifetime, the First Lady carried herself and her first oufit, as wife of the President, off with aplomb. Relaxed, confident and statuesque as ever - she's been dubbed the 'commandante in sheath' for her preference for figure skimming dresses - she opted for a 'lemongrass' shade wool lace dress by Cuban-American, New York based designer, Isabel Toledo. With it she wore a matching long-line collar-less jacket, teamed with Jimmy Choo Glacier heels and a crystal necklace from Tom Binns. We loved the optimistic colour, a style 'boo sucks' in the face of economic doom and gloom.
The First Lady later switched up into a Jason Wu stunning white floor-length, one-shouldered, embellished gown for the Neighbourhood Ball. Dressing Mrs Obama is an amazing coup for the 26-year-old designer - Jason has only been in the fashion industry for three years.
A host of stars turned out to cheer on the historic event in Washington and turned on the glamour. Demi Moore, who attended at least two balls, wore a chic black shoulderless outfit and then later shimmering metallic sheath dress. Beyonce sang at the Neighbourhood Ball celebration in a floor-length champage silk jewel encrusted gown, while Rosario Dawson rocked a slim black column dress and Jessica Alba kept it simple with a black vest, slim trousers and gold blazer. Black seemed to be a popular choice for the stars, perhaps keen not to upstage the most important couple in America, also worn by Mariah Carey, Mary J Blige, Teri Hatcher and Sharon Stone.
