Last night I attended the exclusive dinner thrown by the Prime Ministers wife Sarah Brown in New York to raise awareness for the White Ribbon Alliance, whose work ELLE is supporting. It was a glittering crowd of supermodels, world leaders and some of the citys most powerful women. The Republican Vice President candidate Sarah Palin made a surprise appearance at the event, which was co-hosted by Queen Rania of Jordan and Wendi Murdoch. Sarah Brown had flown in earlier in the day with the Prime Minister straight from the Labour Party conference and today (Thursday), Gordon Brown will be addressing the United Nations conference as part of the global plan to save 10 million mothers and children by the year 2015.
New York is on high security alert for the UN conference and last night was no exception. A radiant Queen Rania was accompanied by four bodyguards for the event, as was Palin when she arrived. At just 5ft 2in, she made an impressive entrance to mingle alongside Helena Christensen, Christy Turlington, Liya Kebede, Whoopi Goldberg, Aerin Lauder and the citys most influential women in the media.
Sarah Brown gave a powerful speech before dinner and the audience, which also included Sarah Ferguson, was clearly moved by her words on the work of the White Ribbon Alliance.
When I spoke to Sarah Browns assistant earlier in the day, she said every minute of the Prime Ministers wifes schedule was fully booked before she arrived at the event.
