I’m not saying that I’m an international style icon per se, but when a major Hollywood actress steals your style, you simply cannot ignore what that must mean.
Let me explain. At the end of 2011, I flew to Shanghai, courtesy of Moet & Chandon, to interview Scarlett Johansson for ELLE and drink lots of vintage champagne. Wow, I love that sentence.
Of course, it’s not everyday you interview somebody that beautiful and talented so I won’t lie, I spent some time (it may have been weeks) agonising about what I would wear.
Like a first date, I wanted to look good but not really look like I had made any kind of effort. In the end, I chose a simple, silk black dress from The Kooples with lace panels on the waist.
Scarlett wore a pair of high waisted khaki trousers and a t-shirt and of course upon reflection, I looked like an over-enthusiastic hobbit next to her. The woman is made of different stuff. She’s a superior species. There’s nothing you can do.
Anyway, as we sat down for the interview, she remarked upon how much she loved my dress:
Internal reaction: O.M to the G!/Gooooooal!/My life’s work is complete.
External reaction: ‘Oh, this old thing? Thanks.’
‘Where’s it from?’ she asked.
I told her it was from The Kooples and she looked at me quizzically. She hadn’t heard of the brand and was keen to hear more about it. I told her what I knew and the interview commenced. Story over? Not quite.
I got back to London and spent the next week playing things cool by telling everyone within hearing distance that Scarlett Johansson liked my Kooples dress.
And then the defining moment of my style life happened. Scarlett Johansson was spotted in The Kooples in Paris buying half the shop.
I duly quit my job, left London and took up my throne as queen of the world. What a thrill!
