From silver-screen legends like Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Marlene Dietrich, to current house faces Marion Cotillard, Natalie Portman and Charlize Theron, Stars In Dior considers the sartorial record of some of the worlds most recognisable actresses on set and off.
The book is peppered with anecdotes about actresses affection for the house. These extend to 1950, when Dietrich, a friend of the couturier, extracted a contractual obligation for Alfred Hitchcock to furnish her with a Dior wardrobe for the filming of Stage Fright. No Dior, no Dietrich, she is said to have told the director and producers. Naturally, Dietrich got her wayand got to keep the gowns when filming wrapped.
From 12 May to 23 September, an exhibition in France will display effects from Dietrich, Diors work as a costume designer and selections from the houses archive of red-carpet designs. The companion book, featuring photos of the stars in Dior and sketches of memorable gowns, will publish with Rizzoli in May.More
