Found dead in her room at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles yesterday afternoon, where she was due to attend a pre- Grammy Awards party, news of the 48 year old's death has sent shock waves across the industry.

Within an hour of the news breaking nearly all Twitter trends worldwide were associated with the singer's death and 2,481,652 tweets and retweets had been sent. "That's over a thousand tweets a second" said Topsy.com which indexes influential conversations on social media.

Christina Aguilera led the charge writing, "Whitney's voice was so special to me. Her notes soared to places most singers dream of reaching". Simon Cowell wrote "You're going to remember where you were when you heard the news. It's that significant. She was undoubtedly one of the greatest superstars of all time". While Britney Spears adds "I was the biggest fan of hers. She influenced me so much".
