Giorgio Armani costumes Thandie Newton in 'Maiden'

In Death and the Maiden, Thandie Newton plays Paulina, a former political prisoner who receives an unexpected chance to confront her sadistic captor. The play follows Paulina as she conducts an ad-hoc interrogation of The Doctor and grapples with the memory of her ordeal—all whilst garbed in costumes by Giorgio Armani.

The Italian fashion designer dressed Newton and her two co-stars in the Ariel Dorfman play. Newton wears a black silk shift dress with a black clutch bag and black leather courts, all by the designer. The two male cast members wear suits, tuxedos and casual trousers from Armani.

No stranger to theatrical pursuits, Armani previously costumed London productions including The Little Dog Laughed, Richard II and Swimming with Sharks.

Other fashion designers who have turned costumier include Stefano Pilati of Yves Saint Laurent, who in June wardrobed Kristin Scott Thomas in a revival of Harold Pinter’s ; and Alexander McQueen, who created Sylvie Guillem’s stagewear for Eonnagata at Sadler’s Wells in July 2010.
