UPDATED on 21.10.11: French First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy and Prime Minister Nicolas have named their newborn daughter Giulia.
Carla Bruni-Sarkozy gave birth to a baby girl in Paris on Wednesday evening. The infant, rumoured to be named Dahlia, is Brunis first with husband and French Prime Minister Nicolas Sarkozy.
Sarkozy, who visited Bruni-Sarkozy in hospital before departing for previously scheduled talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, said that mother and daughter are doing very well.
The Prime Minister added that the birth of his daughter is a very profound joy, a joy all the deeper because it is private.
The baby is the first daughter for both parents, who have four children from previous relationships.
Before giving birth, the ever-discreet Bruni-Sarkozy promised that she would avoid exposing her child to the public eye.
'You don't have a child for the gallery,' she told French TV network TF1 earlier this month. 'I will do everything to protect this child... I will not show photos of this child, I will never expose this child. I think exposure to public life is a choice to be made by an adult.'More
