So thats how they kept their costumes pristine! In this behind-the-scenes photo from The Lavender Hill Mob, a young Audrey Hepburn can be seen relaxing onto a slightly reclined board with armrestsa standing chair.

A publicist suggested that the contraption would have been devised by on-set carpenters as a recliner that helped Hepburn keep her suit crease-free. Its impossible to verify, as anyone who worked on the 1951 film has passed away, but really, how clever!

Considering all the film lore about costumes so tight that they had to be sewn onto actresses, (Marilyn Monroes little black dress in Some Like it Hot, Olivia Newton-Johns black leggings in Grease), this makes brilliant sense.

What other wardrobe-mistress innovations dont we know about? And can we get one of these for our tube journeys?

The Lavender Hill Mob has been restored for re-release in selected cinemas today.
