Holy Hollywood A-listers, Batman! Christian Bale has finally handed over the mask, as it was today announced that Ben Affleck is the latest in a long line of stars – also including Michael Keaton and George Clooney - to play the iconic role. Set to be released in the summer of 2015, the forthcoming Superman sequel is the first to pit the world’s two most famous superheroes together.

Henry Cavill will once again don that famous red and blue onesie to reprise his role from this year’s Man Of Steel. Elle cover girl Amy Adams will also star as Lois Lane.

Zack Snyder – who directed Man of Steel - will also direct the comic book mash-up, which is already causing consternation amongst purist fans. But Snyder is adamant not only that the two should meet on screen, but that Ben is the right man for the Batman role.

"[Affleck] has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne," said Snyder. "I can't wait to work with him."

What we’re wondering though, is whether he’ll have to shave off the beard – don't do it Ben! The Elle team love a good beard
