Calling all film fans

By Tamsin Crimmens

If you’re in the capital this week don’t miss your chance to catch a movie premiere at the 56th BFI London Film Festival.

Here are five of the best at the fest. Read on to find out how you can win tickets to Love, Marilyn

Love, Marilyn

Feed your fascination with the iconic Marilyn Monroe with this documentary using excerpts from the star’s own poems and letters. Home movie footage is also included while famous readers include Evan Rachel Wood, Uma Thurman and Marisa Tomei.

Argo

After Gone Baby Gone and The Town, Ben Affleck is emerging as one of the top actors-turned-directors to watch. His latest drama/thriller is the incredible true story of hostages who were rescued by US agents posing as the production team on a fictional film.

Frankenweenie 3D

Opening this year’s festival is Tim Burton’s witty, inventive animation about a science-mad kid who manages to bring his dog back to life with chaotic results. This typically dark insight into small town America also reunites Burton with Edward Scissorhands star Winona Ryder, who voices the goth girl next door.

The Hunt

Danish director Thomas Vinterberg could be eyeing an Oscar nomination for this accomplished insight into the dangers of small town gossip. The magnetic Mads Mikkelsen (the baddie from Casino Royale) stars in this unforgettable and visually stunning film.

Beasts of the Southern Wild

Hailed as a masterpiece by many at Cannes Film Festival, this fantastical slice of magic realism tells of a characterful little girl living in the Louisiana swamps. Haunting imagery mingles with heart-warming humour.
