The singer wore a blue velvet bodysuit with a wing-like chiffon cape courtesy of fashion designer friend Hannah Marshall.
Marshall, who has created performance-wear for Welch in the past, had two weeks to create the garment after being approached by Aldene Johnson, Welch’s long-time stylist. ‘The turnaround was really tight,’ Marshall told us, ‘but obviously it was something that I jumped at doing.’
Marshall said she drew inspiration from Welch’s dynamic performance style and lyrics to the band’s ‘No Light, No Light’ when crafting the ensemble.
‘The thing that’s very different about Flo is that not only does she sound incredible, but she has this rare ability to give clothes a life of their own,’ Marshall said. ‘She’s a performer; she’s not just a singer. She really understands the power of clothing coupled with music.... With Florence, it’s very much about the movement and the raw power of performance.’
Mood board references as varied as owls in flight, spider web-wrapped trees and a sculpture draped in silk filtered through into the dramatic, raven-like garment. As a final touch, Marshall embellished the costume with Swarovski Elements to ensure that Welch sparkled with every gesture.
When Coachella ends after next weekend, Welch will take the outfit on the road through the US, Australia and Europe as part of her official tour wardrobe. For her last tour, wardrobing honours went to Gucci Creative Director Frida Giannini. Welch has also worn designs by Alice Temperley and Chanel for performances.
Marshall, who is based in London, couldn’t make it to Indio, California for the festival itself. Instead, she stayed up all night to watch the performance on Coachella’s YouTube channel—at 5:45am London time.
‘I didn’t want to miss it!’ she said. ‘When you’ve worked so closely on a project—making sure every seam line is in place, every crystal is in the right place, the material is perfect, and then packaging it up and sending it off to LA—the performance is the main part. I didn’t want to be asleep when it happened.’
