We'd have been guessing for a long time before we named Liz Hurley as a likely style icon for Lady Gaga. But once look at Gaga in vintage Versace last night and there was no doubt. For a night out in Milan, she wore a full length black dress, slashed down either side and fasted with oversized gold safety pins.

Eye-catching enough on its own account, but ever since 1994, when a little-known British actress called Liz Hurley wore it to the premiers of Four Weddings and a Funeral with her (then) more-famous boyfriend Hugh Grant, this Versace creation has simply been known as 'That Dress.' It even has its own Wikipedia page.

Whether Gaga – who was eight in 1994 – was aware of the dress's history isn't clear. But she certainly makes it her own with the monumental platforms. And, besides, the Nineties revival is very now...

The more we think about it, the more the two stars have in common. They both know how to grab headlines with their outfit choices. They are both queens of Twitter. And they are both cosmetics ambassadors – Gaga for MAC Viva Glam and Hurley for Estee Lauder. If Gaga could just find herself an ex-cricketer fiancé with incredibly white teeth, they'd practically be twins.
