Naeem Khan is the latest name to be graced with an Inauguration fashion moment courtesy of Michelle Obama.

The First Lady wore a custom-made, wool-appliqué coat embellished with jewels and a matching dress by the US designer to attend a traditional post-inaugural interfaith prayer service at the National Cathedral, along with Joe Biden and his wife, yesterday.

If she was exhausted by the celebrations at the previous night’s Inauguration Ball she didn’t show it, with her new bangs perfectly in place.

Khan, something of a go-to for Michelle, told WWD that he’d created the outfit about a month in advance but had no idea when – and indeed if – it would be worn.

And he had no sour grapes at missing out on the ‘big’ daywear moment, at Monday’s swearing-in ceremony, for which Michelle wore a blue dress coat by Thom Browne with J.Crew shoes.

‘It’s an ongoing thing,’ Khan said graciously. ‘She looked so beautiful yesterday. You might feel a little sad but you have to contemplate the process. I know she loves my things and there will be more things that come along.’

Jason Wu and Reed Krakoff round out the First Lady’s Inauguration wardrobe. And tomorrow? Well, it’s back to the day job.
