Luckily, non-profit organisations like the British Fashion Council and the Council of Fashion Designers of America exist to put this right.
Yesterday, the finalists for this year's CFDA Fashion Fund were announced in New York.
The prize - in addition to money-can't-buy mentorship - is $400,000 for the winner and $150,000 each for two runners-up.
After studio visits and in-depth interviews, the 10 finalists will do a special design challenge and present a selection of looks at the Chateau Marmont in LA.
