Tom Ford is the latest designer to comment on whether or not he would be comfortable dressing the incoming First Lady, Melania Trump.

"I was asked to dress [Melania Trump] quite a few years ago and I declined," Ford said in an interview on the US talk show The View. "She's not necessarily my image."

Ford's comment comes a day after fellow American designer Marc Jacobs said he too would have "no interest whatsoever" in dressing Trump. Diane von Furstenberg and Tommy Hilfiger however have been much more accommodating in their response to the question. Hilfiger said he would be "proud" to dress the new First Lady and the former explained: "Melania deserves the respect of any First Lady before her".

Ford did give a very justified explanation as to why he does not think either Trump or Hillary Clinton should be wearing his clothes.

"The First Lady – other than the fact that I'm a democrat and voted for Hillary and am very sad and disappointed that she's not in office – even had Hillary won, she shouldn't be wearing my clothes," he said. "They're too expensive. And I don't mean that in a bad way. They're not artificially expensive. It's how much it costs to make these things. But I think to relate to everybody, you shouldn't necessarily [wear such expensive clothes]."

Ford dressed Michelle Obama on just one occasion during her time as the First Lady when she was going for dinner with the Queen at Buckingham Palace: "That, I thought was appropriate… It was an honour."
