Another coat worn by Meghan Markle has got everyone talking as she continues to trailblaze the fashion forward approach for her royal visits.
Markle and Prince Harry arrived in Edinburgh on Tuesday for their first joint official visit to Scotland. The couple greeted crowds outside Edinburgh castle before they head onto a social enterprise cafe in the city centre and attend a reception at Holyroodhouse this evening.
The couple arrived just after midday and Markle's Burberry tartan double-faced wool cashmere coat from its SS18 runway collection immediately caught some people's attention.
As well as being particularly appropriate for a visit to Scotland, the coat was a relevant choice for a number of other reasons too.
Tartan has been spotted frequently on both the catwalks and the streets of New York as fashion month has kicked off. Balenciaga, Self-Portrait and Miu Miu have all included the print in their collections recently, leading The Guardian to predict that 'loud and rebellious tartan is all set to make a statement on the catwalk'.
Of course, no one does checks quite like Burberry, the fashion house behind Markle's coat. The coat is patterned with blackwatch tartan, which is traditionally the tartan of the infantry battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland.
Markle's decision to wear Burberry also ties in with developments in the brand as its outgoing chief creative officer Christopher Bailey makes his exit next month. Bailey recently announced that his final collection for the brand will be a celebration of LGBTQ+ communities as rainbow colours will be intertwined with the brand's traditional beige and black checks.
Markle also appears to be taking style tips from her future sister-in-law the Duchess of Cambridge, who wore a tartan coat to Church with the rest of the royal family on Christmas Day.
Back in 2012, Kate also wore blackwatch tartan on a visit to a school in Berkshire to mark the Scottish national holiday of St Andrews Day.
The couple's visit to Scotland's capital comes a day after more wedding plans were revealed. On the big day, which takes place on 19 May, the couple will marry at midday before travelling through the town of Windsor in a carriage where well-wishers may have the chance to catch a glimpse of the newly-wedded royal couple.
