Yesterday, betting came to an abrupt halt when it was widely believed Alexander McQueen creative director Sarah Burton was the most likely fashion designer to have created Meghan Markle's wedding dress.

But, a new fashion designer has accidentally thrown his name into the ring. And, given his close relationship with the bride-to-be, we're all ears.

In a recent interview with WWD, designer Roland Mouret remained tight-lipped (well, almost) about his role in designing the former actress' bridal gown for her big day on 19 May at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle.

'Mmmmm, I don't want to say. No comment. It's…there is no comment on that. She's a friend. And that's…I can't say,' he said.

In another interview with the New York Post, he added: 'Meghan knows really well what she likes and the main thing with Meghan is to listen to her and work in collaboration with her.

When pressed for more details, he replied bashfully: 'I've already said too much.'

Mouret - who is widely believed to have mentored Victoria Beckham as a fashion designer - and Markle struck up a friendship years ago when the pair met in a hotel lift in Istanbul.

'This man in a bathrobe said, "I'd love to dress you",' Meghan previously shared. 'I thought "whaaat?" Then he told me who he was and we've been friends ever since.'

The French fashion designer - adored by the likes of Kate Middleton and Kim Kardashian - and the Californian soon-to-be royal have become so close that he even featured on her now-deleted Instagram account on several occasions.

Yesterday, bookmakers Paddy Power revealed they'd had a 'flood of bets' on McQueen's fashion house designing the bridal gown, leading the odds to fall from16/1 to 8/1 and then into the two's.

'Our traders have been inundated with bets for McQueen to be the designer of Meghan's dress this morning. So much so they've had to suspend the betting,' a spokesperson said. 'Either someone sneaky knows something, or there's plenty of shrewd punters who are up on their fashion knowledge.'

The spokesperson added to ELLE UK that they do not know why the huge influx of McQueen bets happened, it could be that they are 'in the know', 'have heard a whisper', may be fashion followers or could just be guessing.

Burton or Mouret - who will it be?
