A great, great actor died yesterday - one whose gift for comedy and drama have made us laugh and weep (frequently simultaneously).
Robin Williams, you will be very missed, but never forgotten.
Here are the Robin Williams moments that Team ELLE will most remember him for. Not necessarily his greatest roles, just our favourites. Enjoy.
THE BIRDCAGE
Remakes often suck. Especially remakes of great French films. Not so in this case. The American re-imagining of La Cage Aux Folles, starring Robin Williams and Nathan Lane as gay parents trying to impress their son's conventional future in-laws, is glorious.
Best Williams line: 'Men... Smear'.
DEAD POETS SOCIETY
Williams' performance of liberal teacher John Keating attempting to teach a class of teenage boys in a rigidly uncompromising boarding school to think for themselves lives on as one of the most inspiring performances of his career.
Best Williams line: 'No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world.'
MRS DOUBTFIRE
A divorced actor disguises himself as a woman to gain employment as a housekeeper in order to live with his children. We lose it when she uses the saucepan lids.
Best Williams line: 'Sorry I'm late. After all those scotches I had to piss like a racehorse.'
GOOD MORNING, VIETNAM
Williams at his best, playing a subversive free-thinker - the irreverant DJ of an army radio station broadcasting out of Vietnam.
Best Williams line: 'Just play it loud, OK.'
ALADDIN
Williams voiced the wise-cracking, good-hearted, in-your-face genie, and stole the show. Of course.
Best Williams line: 'Are you lookin' at me? Did you rub my lamp?'
GOOD WILL HUNTING
Williams won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his turn as academic Sean Maguire. The famous scene where Sean tells un-recognised genius janitor Will Hunting (Matt Damon) about his late wife's flatulence was Williams ad-libbing. Rumour has it, the slight camera shake is due to the cameraman laughing so hard.
