Victoria Beckham is leading tributes to her husband David after he announced his retirement from football yesterday. ‘The children and I are so proud of David. It’s been an incredible journey for us all throughout the last 15 years,’ she said.

It was only at the start of 2013, when ELLE interviewed Victoria for our March cover story that she said, ‘Now David has finished playing for LA Galaxy and we are starting a new chapter in our lives; as a family we are all very excited about what lies ahead for 2013.’

What lay ahead was a season with Paris St Germain, culminating in the team winning the French championships, and yesterday’s announcement with Beckham bowing out at the top of his game.

‘To me and the children he will always be an amazing sportsman and a devoted husband and father,’ said Victoria of David’s retirement. ‘He is, and will always remain, a true ambassador for sport and is not just an inspiration to myself and our children but for millions of people worldwide.’

‘There was a time when David was playing football, not just for a club, but for his country, so he was very busy,’ she said in the March issue of ELLE. ‘I’m a workaholic, David’s a workaholic. We joke and say, “One day, when the kids are grown up, we’ll start with holidays.”’

Now that David’s a little less busy, maybe we’ll see more of him at Victoria’s catwalk shows. Indeed, a source close to David has suggested to WWD he may follow her into fashion.

He’s already collaborated with H&M - who can forget his bodywear line for the high-street giant, along with short film by Guy Ritchie to advertise it? ‘We are very happy with the collaboration and look forward to launching the new collection this autumn,’ said a spokeman for H&M.

Becks in his underwear again? We can’t wait.
